To ensure safe mining excavations, gathering, interpretation and analysis of geotechnical data and report writing.
Job description

Mapping and Core logging
  • Inspect post blast mined excavations for signs of rock instability
  • Conduct rock fall risk assessments and give feedback to the mining contractor
  • Conduct rock mass ratings, quality of rocks and structures; and specify support types
  • Perform geotechnical mapping (e.g. Adamtech)
  • Perform line mapping and record orientations of geological discontinuities
  • Record presence of water seepage
  • Process and analyse mapping data
  • Carry out kinematic analysis in Dips, Unwedge & Swedge
  • Conduct geotechnical logging on diamond drill core
 
Monitoring and Reconciliation
  • Ensure and analyse Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) on support installations
  • Collect data from installed monitoring devices and communicate with relevant parties
  • Analyse monitoring data
  • Monitor excavations performance
  • Reconcile design vs. actual performance and manage input into recon database
 
Input into Mine Planning and Design
  • Provide ad-hoc development support recommendations, designs and remedial action plans
  • Assist in Structural modelling
  • Assist in Empirical and Numeric modelling of stopes/excavations
  • Assist in excavations design from a geotechnical perspective
  • Provide ad-hoc stope support design
  • Ensure QAQC on backfill operations
 
Ground Control Management Plan and Reporting
  • Provide input on the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP)
  • Ensure that operations adhere to GCMP
  • Compile daily, weekly or monthly reports as required
 

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12
  • BSc. Degree in Geology / Engineering Geology / Mining Engineering (NQF Level 7)
  • Certificate in Strata Control (Chamber of Mines SA) or similar
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a mining environment, of which 3 years should be experience relevant to Engineering Geology / Mine Engineering
  • Proficiency in CAD or Minesight software and Numeric modelling software e.g. Rocscience Suite / ITASCA codes
  • Valid Code B Driver’s License
