The Junior Engineering Geologist is responsible for Field data collection, monitoring, data analysis and interpretations, and Report writing.
Job description

Geotechnical Operations

  • Ensure that mining takes place safely, e.g., scaling of loose rocks is done safely.
  • Inspect benches and berms for signs of rock instability.
  • Record the orientation of geological discontinuities.
  • Carry out walk-over surveys and look for evidence of previous and potential rock falls, open cracks/back breaks, and undercut faces where dangerous “hanging” conditions exist in and around the pit.
  • Carry out Field and Photogrammetry Mapping of mined faces in the Pit.
  • Assist with the demarcation of areas in different risk categories.
  • Update hazard plan maps regularly.
  • Take water level readings in water wells.
  • Core logging, including detailed geotechnical structure, zone logs, and quick logs.
  • Supervision of the drilling crew at the rig to ensure good quality control.
  • Capturing all field data into Excel sheets, both the logging and mapping data and exporting to the Torque database.
  • Daily inspection and monitoring of the Mobile Pit Slope Monitoring Radar (ArcSAR) and the Fixed Module Pit Slope Monitoring Radar (FM) and troubleshooting errors.
  • Installation and Monitoring of Prisms 
  • Downloading of the Vibrating Wire Transducers (VWT) data, processing and updating and interpretations.

  • Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and keep the assigned work area clean and tidy.
  • Report all unsafe acts and conditions as well as injuries, accidents, equipment damage and near- miss incidents to the supervisor promptly.




Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Minimum Technical Diploma in A Geological or Geological Engineering field (NQF Level 6)
  • Minimum two year's experience in mine operations
  • Valid code B driver’s license
