The Junior exploration geologist is responsible for exploration, definition and development of new mineral deposits, including collecting and interpreting geological and other exploration data.
Job description
Duties and Responsibilities
- Document geological characteristics, select and mark samples, record structural data, and ensure QAQC adherence.
- Measure and record recovery, RQD, IRS, SG, and detailed structural parameters.
- Monitor drilling and sampling crew to maintain quality and protocol compliance.
- Plot geology on sections, prepare quick logs, update software, and manage core photography.
- Collect geological information in the field and prepare a geological map.
- Assist with drill supervision, ensuring correct location, dip, inclination, and azimuth.
- Oversee proper core handling and accuracy of core boxes and run blocks.
- Prepare sample submissions and oversee geophysical surveys and sampling crews for geochemical sample collection.
- Supervise sampling programs, ensuring correct location, depth, and procedures.
- Data entry and checking of geological data.
- Direct cutting of lines.
- Ensure reports are accurate, concise, and complete, with precise maps, legends, north arrows, scales, and readable graphics.
- Create maps, sections, and PowerPoint presentations for the exploration program and its results.
- Insertion of QAQC control samples.
- Monitoring QAQC results from the laboratory.
- Limited management of geotechnical staff, particularly in the field, with the supervision of sampling work.
Safety, Health and Environment
- Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures
- Actively participate in safety and toolbox meetings and conduct a monthly safety inspection of the work area
- Report all unsafe acts and conditions as well as injuries, accidents, equipment damage and near-miss incidents to the supervisor promptly
- Wear and maintain the PPE appropriate to the task and area while on duty
Minimum requirements
- Minimum Grade 12
- Minimum B.Sc. in Geology | NQF Level 7
- No experience required; however, Pre-Graduation Intern work experience will serve as an advantage
- Working knowledge of geological software like QGIS, Datamine, MicroMine or Leapfrog would be an added advantage
- Valid Code B Driver’s License
- Registration with professional organizations such as the Geological Society of South Africa as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) will be an advantage
