Introduction
To coordinate, supervise and drive the safety, environmental management and ventilation of the underground operations by ensuring effective implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS) in full compliance with mining plans and applicable legislation, standards, and ventilation planning.
Job description
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the development and implementation of the Health & Safety Management System, including hazard identification, risk assessment, inspection reports on compliance with mine standards and legislative requirements.
- Ensure Safety Management System elements (policies, procedures, standards, risk assessments) are implemented and maintained.
- Enforce legislation requirements, company procedures, policies and codes of practice related to underground operations and ensure contractors are compliant with B2Gold and legislative standards.
- Develop and maintain ventilation plans in line with the mine designs, and both short and long-term plans.
- Develop and update ventilation models to optimise air flows, energy consumption and ventilation cost.
- Coordinate and drive the implementation of the Mine Safety Management System in line with legal requirements.
- Manage environmental aspects related to the underground operations.
- Lead and support the mine emergency preparedness planning and support the Emergency response team during incidents.
- Coordinate field inspections on underground safety, health and environment.
- Coordinate, lead and or assist with incident/accident/ICAM investigations.
- Coordinate underground ventilation and safety training programs, as well as the induction process.
- Coordinate and oversee QA/QC of the Occupational Hygiene Monitoring Program for Underground.
- Schedule and coordinate emergency drills and simulations.
- Supervise, mentor, and coordinate subordinates and safety representatives
Safety, Health and Environment
- Comply with the B2Gold Golden Rules, Code of Conduct and all Policies.
- Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
- Actively participate in safety and/or toolbox meetings and conduct a monthly safety inspection of the work area based on the schedule set by Management.
- Maintain a safe working environment and keep the assigned work area clean and tidy.
- Report all unsafe acts and conditions as well as injuries, accidents, equipment damage and near-miss incidents to the supervisor timeously.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma in Safety Management / Occupational Health & Safety (NQF Level 6), with extensive underground working experience, or Underground Blasting Ticket with certification in Ventilation and extensive underground working experience, or Trade Certificate with certification in Ventilation and extensive underground working experience.
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience within the health and safety discipline in an underground mining environment.
- Proven practical experience in underground ventilation systems and controls.
- Thorough knowledge of Safety Management Systems (e.g. ISO 45001) and working knowledge of applicable Namibian mining, labour and occupational health and safety legislation.
- Experience with underground emergency response (Proto team).
- Valid Code B driver’s licence.
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
- Professional registration or membership with a recognised occupational health and safety body (e.g. IOSH, SAIOSH or equivalent).
- Recognised OHS certification such as SAMTRAC, NEBOSH or equivalent.
