The Environmental graduate will receive practical, hands-on training designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industrial application, while assisting with the implementation of environmental management strategies at the mine and gaining practical workplace experience to support professional development.
Job description

Environmental Compliance 

  • Develop a research project on biodiversity and community recovery by assessing insect composition and diversity at both rehabilitated and reference sites.
  • At the end of the programme, the graduate will be required to present a technical report detailing the learning outcomes and to submit a research project on the main problem identified, including recommendations on how it should be addressed.

Environmental Performance / Output 

  • Assist with bird monitoring at water ponds and report any faunal mortalities.
  • Support the collection of grass and woody species seeds for rehabilitation purposes.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of rehabilitation slopes.
  • Support the relocation and transplanting of seedlings onto rehabilitation sites.
  • Assist with land-clearing surveys and close-out audits.
  • Support daily and monthly water quality monitoring, including potable water sampling.
  • Assist with particulate matter (PM₁₀) monitoring and dust fallout monitoring setup.
  • Support on-site and neighbouring farm water level monitoring.
  • Assist with weather data downloads, rainfall monitoring, and evaporation rate recording.
  • Support bioremediation activities and rehabilitation assessments, including Landscape Function Analysis.
  • Assist in updating biodiversity registers and analysing biodiversity and rehabilitation monitoring data.
  • Support research into innovative practices and technologies related to mine closure.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably requested by the Supervisor.

Safety, Health and Environment 

  • Comply with the B2Gold Golden Rules, Code of Conduct and all Policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in safety and/or toolbox meetings and conduct a monthly safety inspection of the work area based on the schedule set by Management.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and keep the assigned work area clean and tidy.
  • Report all unsafe acts and conditions as well as injuries, accidents, equipment damage and near-miss incidents to the supervisor timeously.

Minimum requirements

  • Minimum BSc in Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management, or related environmental fields, with entomology
  • (NQF Level 7)
  • No prior experience required
  • A background in entomology research will be an added advantage
  • Valid Code B Driver’s Licence
