Introduction
The Safety Officer is responsible for implementing and monitoring safety systems at the Otjikoto Mine in compliance with Namibian mining and occupational health and safety legislation, Mine Rules, and B2Gold HSE standards, with the objective of preventing injuries, incidents and environmental harm, and always fostering a strong safety culture.
Job description
Duties and Responsibilirtes
- Ensure compliance with the Minerals Act, Mine Health and Safety Regulations, Labour Act, and Mine Rules.
- Conduct statutory workplace inspections and maintain legal registers, permits, and statutory records.
- Support inspections by relevant ministries and assist Management in fulfilling statutory health and safety obligations.
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the SHE Management System.
- Facilitate baseline, continuous, and task-based risk assessments.
- Identify hazards and verify the implementation of control measures using the hierarchy of controls.
- Monitor critical risks including ground control, mobile equipment, explosives, and energy isolation.
- Conduct routine inspections in underground, open pit, plant, and workshop areas.
- Participate in internal audits, Mine Safety Committee inspections, and emergency response activities.
- Compile daily safety reports and assist with weekly and monthly OHS reporting.
- Ensure immediate reporting of accidents and dangerous occurrences.
- Conduct incident investigations, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Maintain incident registers and ensure timely close-out of corrective actions.
- Assist with health and safety training, toolbox talks, refresher sessions, and site inductions.
- Ensure contractor compliance with Mine SHE requirements, including review of SHE plans. and risk assesments.
Safety, Health, and Environment
- Comply with the B2Gold Golden Rules, Code of Conduct and all Policies.
- Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
- Actively participate in safety and/or toolbox meetings and conduct a monthly safety inspection of work area based on the schedule set by Management.
- Maintain a safe working environment, and keep the assigned work area clean and tidy.
- Report all unsafe acts and conditions as well as injuries, accidents, equipment damage and near-miss incidents to the supervisor timeously.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12
- Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (Mining) or a related discipline - NQF Level 5
- Recognised Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH, SAMTRAC or equivalent)
- A Degree in Safety will be an advantage.
- Minimum 4 years’ experience within the Health & Safety Discipline, preferably in the mining industry
- Valid code B driver’s licence
